Can you split expenses with someone who doesn't have the app?

The EvenRound team · EditorialPublished Updated 2 min read

Your friend won't download anything. Their excuses are getting creative. Here's how to split with them anyway.

Yes — and they don't need to download anything. EvenRound was built on this premise: every member has a unique magic link, and the link works in any browser. You add the person, share the URL via WhatsApp or iMessage, they tap it once, and they're in the group. There's no app store, no account, no email-and-password. If they refuse even that, you can keep tracking on their behalf — adding their expenses for them — and just send them the settle-up amount at the end.

Steps

  1. 01
Add them as a member with just a display name

Email is optional. A first name alone is fine. EvenRound creates a member record and generates their personal magic link.

  2. 02
Share the magic link via the channel they already use

WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, regular SMS. The 'Share' button in the group generates a one-tap URL. They don't open an app — they open a webpage.

  3. 03
If they still won't tap it, log their expenses for them

You can add an expense paid by Alex even if Alex hasn't joined. The group balance still calculates correctly. They just won't see the dashboard themselves until they tap the link.

  4. 04
Settle up by sending them a single number

When the trip's done, the group dashboard shows everyone's net. Screenshot Alex's row, send it: 'You owe £42, here's my Revolut tag.' They pay; you mark it as paid in EvenRound.

  5. 05
Once they see how easy it is, they usually join

Most reluctant friends tap the link on day three of the trip when they realise everyone else can see who's spent what. The reluctance is almost always about 'another app to install' — and that bit doesn't apply here.

Worked example

The friend who 'doesn't do apps'

Lex is on a stag-do in Berlin. Best man Pete adds him by name only ('Lex - won't download anything'). Pete shares the link via WhatsApp; Lex doesn't tap. By Saturday, Lex sees Pete's screen showing 'Lex owes €76.' Lex taps the link, joins in 8 seconds, splits the final dinner himself. No conversion required.

EvenRound is the no-app expense splitter precisely so this scenario isn't a deal-breaker. The friend who 'doesn't do apps' isn't refusing your tool — they're refusing app stores. We don't have one.
