Splitting expenses on a Prague trip - what to budget, how to settle up

Last updated by The EvenRound team.

30-koruna beers, ossuary day trips, and one ATM fee that quietly cost €8.

Prague is the European capital where group expenses are simplest in concept and trickiest in practice. The conceptual ease: beer is cheap, food is cheap, attractions are cheap. The practical mess: every ATM that isn't a major Czech bank charges 5–10% in 'dynamic currency conversion' fees, and many bars in the centre quote prices in EUR for tourists at terrible rates. Multi-currency expense logging matters here.

Realistic per-person daily budget

Local currency: Czech koruna (CZK)

CategoryPer person, per dayNotes

Food and drinks€25–€40 (CZK 600–1000)Pivnice meal CZK 250–400, beer CZK 35–60, coffee CZK 60–90.
Transport€4–€8 (CZK 100–200)Day pass CZK 120; tram/metro single ride CZK 30. Bolt to clubs CZK 150–300.

Common shared-expense scenarios in Prague

  1. 01
Pivnice dinner with rounds of beer the waiter just brings

At U Fleku and other traditional pivnice, the waiter keeps bringing beer and adding tally marks to your coaster until you say stop. Each beer is CZK 60–80.

    Split tip

Log the closing bill as one expense, equal split among drinkers. Don't try to count tallies after the fact.

  2. 02
Tour group with mixed attendees on a Kutná Hora day trip

Train is CZK 120 round-trip per person; ossuary entry CZK 100. Some skip the day trip entirely.

    Split tip

Per-attendee for everything. Don't merge into one trip-day expense.

  3. 03
ATM withdrawal with hidden DCC fee

Use a Euronet ATM with 'dynamic currency conversion' and pay 8% extra without realising.

    Split tip

Always decline DCC ('charge me in CZK, not in my home currency'). The ATM tries to scare you with 'no exchange rate guarantee' - ignore it. Your bank's rate is always better.

  4. 04
Old Town bar where they 'forgot' your tab and added drinks

Tourist-area bars in Staré Město are notorious for adding drinks to bills. Always check.

    Split tip

Photograph the bill before paying. If the group is logging in real-time, discrepancies are easier to spot.

  5. 05
Pre-tour group beers at the Letná beer garden

Self-serve beer garden, each person buys their own pint at CZK 50. Snacks shared.

    Split tip

Beers personal, snacks equal among the table.

Recommended split mode for Prague

Equal for shared, log everything in CZK

Logging in EUR loses the FX-snapshot at expense time. Always log in CZK and let the app convert at settlement using the snapshot rate.

Best for groups of …

Best for groups of 4–10. Prague is one of the few European capitals where 10 people in one apartment is both feasible and affordable.

Currency notes

Czech koruna (CZK). Despite being EU, Czechia hasn't adopted the euro. Decline DCC at every ATM and card payment - it's a 5–10% surcharge for nothing. Tipping is 10% rounded up. Avoid bureaux de change in the Old Town - they have spreads of up to 15%. Use a major bank ATM (ČSOB, KB, Komerční Banka) or a Revolut-style card.

Prague is the cheapest big group trip in Europe - until DCC fees and tourist-bar surcharges quietly drain 10% off the top. Log in CZK, decline DCC, and trust the snapshot rates.
