Migrating from Splitwise: what to know

Splitwise's 4-expenses-per-day cap on the free tier is the number-one reason people DM us asking how to migrate. Here's the actual playbook. Plan on 10–20 minutes for an active group.

Before you start

• Decide which Splitwise groups to bring over. You probably don't need all of them - focus on groups that are still active or have unsettled balances.
• Check whether you're on the free tier or Pro. Pro lets you export full history; free tier exports only the last 30 days.
• Tell the group what you're doing. A heads-up "we're switching to EvenRound, here's the new link" works better than a silent migration.

Step 1: Export from Splitwise

Open Splitwise on the web (the mobile app doesn't have export). Open the group, click the gear icon, and choose "Export as spreadsheet". You'll get a CSV with the following columns:

Date, Description, Category, Cost, Currency,
Alex's share, Beth's share, ...

Save this somewhere safe. You're not going to import it directly into EvenRound (we don't support direct import yet), but it's your record of what existed.

Pro tip: export per-group, not per-account

Splitwise's "export all" gives you a giant CSV with every group merged. Per-group exports are easier to map.

Step 2: Decide what to bring over

Don't try to recreate Splitwise's full history. You don't need to. What matters is:

• Current balances - who owes whom, today, in this group.
• Unsettled expenses - anything that hasn't been settled yet and needs to be split.
• Recurring expenses - rent, utilities, subscriptions you'll want to set up again.

Settled past expenses are bookkeeping. They're nice to have, but EvenRound doesn't need them to start working correctly.

Step 3: Create the EvenRound group

Open /groups/new. Use the same name and currency as your Splitwise group. Pick the template that fits - Apartment for shared housing, Trip for travel, Couple, Event, or none.

Step 4: Add members

Add each person with the same name they used in Splitwise. EvenRound will generate a magic-link invite for each one. Send the links via the same channel you'd normally use (WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram).

Common gotcha: optional emails

EvenRound doesn't require email, but you can attach one to a member record if you want monthly settle-up reminders. Keep it consistent with what you used in Splitwise so it doesn't feel like starting over.

Step 5: Re-enter unsettled expenses

Walk through your Splitwise CSV and enter every expense that's still contributing to a non-zero balance. For most groups this is the last 2–4 weeks of activity.

If you have a lot, batch it:

• One person re-enters everything in a single sitting.
• Or split it: ask each person to re-enter the expenses they paid for. It's faster and parallel.

Step 6: Set up recurring expenses

Anything that ran on a schedule in Splitwise - rent, internet, subscriptions - set up as a recurring expense in EvenRound. Pick weekly, monthly, or a custom RRULE.

Step 7: Settle once and switch the link

Run Settle Up. The new plan should match your Splitwise balance to the cent. Pay through your usual rail. Pin the EvenRound link wherever the Splitwise link used to live.

What you'll lose

• Long-term history. We don't have a way to import three years of past expenses - but you almost certainly don't need them.
• Splitwise activity feed. EvenRound has audit logs but no chronological feed.
• Splitwise's iOS/Android push notifications. The PWA supports web push, but it's a separate setup per device.

What you'll gain

• No more daily expense cap.
• No more ads on the free tier.
• AI receipt scanning included free.
• Recurring expenses included free.
• EU-hosted data.
• No signup friction for the next person who joins.
