Splitting expenses on a Florence trip - what to budget, how to settle up

Last updated by The EvenRound team.

Uffizi reservations, bistecca alla fiorentina, and a Tuscan day trip with a designated driver.

Florence is the Italian capital of pre-booked tickets and high-priced steaks. The Uffizi requires advance booking (€25 + €4 fee), the Accademia is the same, and a bistecca alla fiorentina is sold by weight at €60–€80/kg - meaning a steak for 4 can be €100+ before sides. Group splits get tricky when one person doesn't eat red meat and another wants the entire bistecca for themselves.

Common shared-expense scenarios in Florence

  1. 01
    Bistecca alla fiorentina dinner

Trattoria Mario or Buca dell'Orafo: €60–€80/kg, cooked rare, served on a plank, sides ordered separately.

    Split tip

Bistecca equal across red-meat eaters; sides equal across all; pasta starters per attendee. Exclude pescatarians and vegetarians from the bistecca portion entirely.

  2. 02
Uffizi pre-booked tickets for the group

Skip-the-line is essential, €29 booked online. Some can't get a slot, some skip art entirely.

    Split tip

Log as one expense, equal split among the people whose name was on a slot.

  3. 03
Chianti day trip with rented car

Small rental €50, fuel €25, tastings €15–€25 per person at three estates.

    Split tip

Car split equally among riders (driver included - they're providing time, not free wine). Tastings per-attendee. Driver skips wine; exclude from tasting splits.

  4. 04
Schiacciata lunch run with mixed orders

All'Antico Vinaio: each person orders a different schiacciata (€7–€10), pays at the counter.

    Split tip

Personal - pay for your own.

  5. 05
Aperitivo at SE-STO on Arno with a view

€18 cocktails, plus a small included aperitivo plate. Some order two; some don't.

    Split tip

    Per-attendee exact.

Recommended split mode for Florence

Exact for restaurants, equal for car rentals and group accommodation

Florence's signature meal - the bistecca - has wildly different attendance (vegetarians, pescatarians, smaller appetites). Equal-splitting it is unfair.

Best for groups of 4–6. Trattorie cap at 6–8 for reservations; Uffizi timed slots cap at 12 per entry.

Currency notes

Eurozone. Coperto (€2–€4 per person) is standard. Tipping 5–10% optional. Contactless widely accepted; bring some cash for tiny pasticcerie and gelaterie. Avoid Mercato Centrale upstairs for tourist-priced meals - eat downstairs at the stalls instead.

Florence is a city of pre-booked attractions and bills-by-weight. Plan the tickets early, log them as soon as bought, and use exact splits at every meal.
