Splitting expenses on a Bali trip - what to budget, how to settle up

Last updated by The EvenRound team.

Villa weeks, surf-lesson mornings, and a scooter rental fleet that one person had to coordinate.

Bali is the group destination with the lowest per-person daily spend on this list and the most exotic currency to track. IDR has six zeros - a typical dinner is IDR 300,000 (€18). Group expense splits revolve around villa rentals (paid up-front in USD or EUR usually), scooter fleets, surf or yoga packages, and Gojek/Grab rides. Multi-currency expense logging matters: log in IDR locally, settle in EUR or USD.

Common shared-expense scenarios in Bali

  1. 01
Villa for the week paid up-front by one organiser

A €4000 villa for 6 = €670 per person, paid weeks ahead via wire or PayPal.

    Split tip

Log as one expense, equal split. Front-loader gets paid back in their preferred currency.

  2. 02
    Scooter fleet rental

Each person rents their own scooter (IDR 90k/day × 7 days = IDR 630k). Plus fuel.

    Split tip

Personal - each person pays their own scooter. Fuel personal too unless someone tops up everyone else's.

  3. 03
Beach club day at La Brisa or Potato Head

Day-bed minimum spend IDR 800k–1500k, lunch and drinks count toward minimum.

    Split tip

Bed equal among users; food/drinks exact per consumer.

  4. 04
Mount Batur sunrise hike with private driver

Driver+guide+breakfast package IDR 600k per person. Some skip the hike for a yoga morning.

    Split tip

    Per-attendee at the package price.

  5. 05
Gojek rides during a beach-hopping day

5–7 short rides over a day, each IDR 25k–60k, paid by individual phone.

    Split tip

Whoever booked it pays; EvenRound auto-nets the running totals.

Recommended split mode for Bali

Equal for villas and group transport, exact for activities and beach clubs

Villa weeks are perfectly equal-split. But surf lessons, yoga packages, and beach club minimums vary by person - use exact.

Currency notes

Indonesian rupiah (IDR). The largest commonly-used note is IDR 100,000 (~€6). ATMs at BCA, Mandiri, BNI charge nothing for international cards; DCC is everywhere - always decline. Tipping is 5–10% at sit-down places, IDR 10k–20k for drivers and porters. Bring some USD for emergencies - many money changers prefer USD over EUR at better rates.

Bali is the group trip with the lowest daily spend and the easiest currency to mistake for a phone number. Log everything in IDR and let the snapshot rates handle settlement.
